Ron Thomson was born in in Rota, Spain in 1969 and has worked as a professional artist for 23 years. In 1993, Thomson earned his BFA with an emphasis on painting at Florida State University. His interest steered away from the institution’s focus on conceptual and abstract art and towards creating paintings about the beauty in our world. Thomson has lived and painted in Florida, Oregon, Alabama and Georgia. He has been awarded an Artist in Residency at the Thomasville Center for the Arts in 2016 where he works and teaches art. Thomson teaches art to all ages, often integrating math, science, history and literature into teaching children . A vast following of students have filled his classes and workshops, seeking the benefit of his pragmatic approach, infectious enthusiasm and fervent belief that we all contain a creative spark. Ron’s desire to achieve new levels of power and drama in his work and reach a broader audience constantly infuses his life and work with new energy.
Ron is an expressive realist working in oils on canvas. His paintings celebrate common and humble subjects elevated by their collaboration with light. His collectors often describe his work as “seemingly alive”. His foundation is observation of his subject with a focus upon conveying the drama of light’s connection with shadow. He seeks opportunities to use lost edges to create passages that unify and create movement in the composition. He often simplifies the subject to draw attention to the paintings “main idea”. Thomson’s goal is to compel the viewer to bypass thoughts about style and technique and create a communion of shared experience between himself and his collectors.
